Introduction The lawsuit over the defective design of Firestone tires put on Ford Explorers was perhaps the most publicised event when a company was sued for defective produce. This defect also resulted in a large number of accidents causing over 200 deaths and 700 injuries in the US alone, in addition to accidents in Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, the Arab Gulf Coast, and East Asia. The massive tire recall by Ford and Firestone on August 9, 2000, sent ripples through the American public and added fuel to the legal fire, causing both manufacturers and the public to rethink many issues. Summary of the Lawsuit On August 9, 2000, â€Å"Ford Motor Company and Bridgestone/Firestone jointly announced a recall in the United States of approximately 6.5 million ATX, ATXII and Wilderness AT tires made in Decatur, Illinois because of tread separation problems† (Eto, 2006). This recall came after the increased incidence of driver deaths in accidents in which Ford Exlorers rolled over triggered widespread public concern. At the time, the company was already faced with multimillion lawsuits. For instance, the lawyers for Edelio and Norma Herrera who died in May 2000 overturning in their Ford Explorer on the way from Disneyland demanded $1 billion from Firestone (BBC). The lawsuits filed, for instance, by the law firm Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, were based on the claim that Firestone and Ford were guilty because it had failed to address the concerns in the testing process. Thus, on June 15, 1989, the auto maker’s engineers prepared a report to the company management in which they â€Å"recommended eight design changes to address the rollover problem and improve the safety of the Explorer† (Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, LLP, 2006). However, the management refused to make the major improvements recommended by engineers, willing to complete the design by the previously announced deadline. Impact on the Corporate World The lawsuit triggered a nation-wide discussion about the liability of auto manufacturers, business ethics, the need to produce quality products, and the regulation of the industry. The fact that Ford’s management had accelerated production at the expense of safety concerns only to face billions of dollars in lawsuits and a major blow to their reputation later on was a lesson to many managers. The way Firestone and Ford were heaping blame on each other was also an important lesson of how companies should not handle a scandal. To demonstrate commitment to improvement, Ford, for instance, â€Å"ended its relationship with the tyre-maker† (BBC, 2001). The scandal affected one of the largest US auto manufacturers, causing the resignation of its Chief Executive Officers, Jacques Nasser. Impact on Regulations The lawsuits have also alerted the American public and regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that new, tougher laws on safety standards have to be adopted. In 2000, US Congress adopted new legislature that aimed to raise safety standards. However, it was clear that such laws should have been adopted long ago when the danger of rollover crashes in SUVs became apparent. The law required tire makers to submit to the regulators far more information about their produce than before. Impact on the Companies The lawsuits that have been partially successful and partially settled out of court cost both companies, especially Firestone a lot. Fiber and Lubricant These are just like the old days but with better products. Plant fibers are replaced with synthetics in these systems and lubricants are designed to remain in a solid state rather than liquefy when heated by friction. This type of product can be used in any regular stuffing box. In the past few years real hemp has become available again, so next time you clean out that stuffing box, get some hemp fiber and mix up some beeswax and linseed oil and you will have better performance than the modern stuffing box repacking kits will give you. Synthetic Putty This is a clay type of product which resembles modeling clay. It acts as an extra layer of defense in a regular stuffing box. Clay seals still require a proper lubricant on the shaft and reinforcement with square braid fiber. This is a lower maintenance solution but still requires regular service. The return of real hemp to the United States market means that stuffing box materials wont break down or melt, which is what clay and putty protect against. Loose hemp fiber is soaked with warm beeswax and linseed oil and that is held in place with a woven hemp grommet like those shown in Ashleys Book of Knots. Mechanical Pack-Less Seals This is a product used on many vessels in a variety of conditions. The unit consists of a high-tolerance, low friction bushing in a stainless steel retainer. PYI is the most well-known manufacturer for retrofit and new build applications. It requires almost no maintenance and is watertight. If you consider vessel downtime and the labor of a traditional stuffing box, the extra cost is worthwhile. The pack-less seals also have the advantage of retaining the prop shaft itself, in case it separates from the drive unit. Losing a shaft will result in a vigorous jet of water entering your bilge compartment. One minor issue is the need for a positive pressure line to feed the surface of the graphite bushing and prevent wear. Some manufacturers do this more elegantly than others and include the positive pressure source in the shaft log housing. Some still have a need for a separate thru-hull fitting which just adds complexity. Including a pre-tapped port for a pressure sensor would be nice, so that pressure around the bushing could be monitored automatically, although this can easily be fitted to the positive pressure line if one exists on your model. Weve encountered a few of these packless units when they were run dry; it shows just how fast they can wear the replaceable components. The cost is far less than it would be for a new complete unit but it still requires a shaft-out repair, which means alignment and tuning for each individual component from the engine to the prop. Dry runs on old style packing are fixed with a partial turn of a man-sized wrench and cost little more than a pair of disposable gloves and some hand cleaner. With practice, the synthetic putty can give you a bilge that is nearly as dry as one fitted with packless logs. Check with your insurance provider, you may receive a discount by changing to a pack-less seal. You will certainly make the crew member who acts as your Oilier happy.

Such words are called irregular verbs. The simple past, the tense form that describes what has previously occurred, is fairly straightforward once one assimilates the forms for each irregular verb. But complications set in when the past participle a verb assisted by an auxiliary verb, or a past-tense form of the verb to be is employed. Some past-participle forms are easily distinguished from their simple-past counterparts, as in the case of ate/eaten, for example, or saw/seen (â€Å"I ate already†/â€Å"I had eaten already†; â€Å"We saw the movie†/â€Å"We had seen the movie†). Others, however, often literally give writers pause. I used to wonder why he never defended himself. After all, he could easily scare them away with a growl or a mean expression. One day, I passed by him on my way to the store. He was sitting on a chair all by himself wearing the saddest expression on his face. A part of me was tempted to go over to him and cheer him up. The other part, however, was wary and cautious of a stranger. All too soon, his tormentors showed up. Two of the boys went behind him and pushed his chair. Toppling clumsily to the ground, he looked awkward and funny. The teens all started laughing hysterically even though I found nothing remotely humorous about the situation. The personification combined with simile to reinforces the illusion the poet has created from his expectations and desires. However,. reality attempts to bring the poet back from his constructed illusion that has been â€Å"shattered and avalanched†¦. [reduced to] broken glass to sweep away†. This is emphasised by the â€Å"black† branches surrounding the â€Å"snow white trunk†.The black branches symbolise the persistent illusion of reality trying to bring him back to what is more real surrounding the white trunk that symbolises the dying purity and untainted illusion he has created of the birches, showing that reality is more persistent than appearances. Unlike Pleasantville, where David does not want to return to the persistent callings of his reality , the poet in â€Å"Birches† realises that although he can visit his â€Å"heaven† using his childhood memory of the birches, he would â€Å"then come back to it [earth] and begin all over†.The nostalgic tone emphasises that he cannot go back to his illusion of appearances as he recognises the reality is more persistent. Through the close study of the Ross’s â€Å"Pleasantville† and Frost’s â€Å"Birches† it is clear that reality is more persistent than appearances. Certainly, it recognized the importance of the dyadic relationship by hiring salespeople with similar characteristics to their customers. But it still was not effective in communicating its formula. Recommended Solutions 1. Instead of just wholly owned subsidiaries, H&M could enter into a joint venture with an American department store to at least build some presence and recognition. Licensing is a fairly low-risk method for entering into a joint venture. An example of this sort of arrangement would be what Guess has with Macy’s stores. Although H&M may have given up most of the profits, this would be a prudent manner in expanding its recognition throughout the US. H&M should still own and operate facilities in the US where it is more urban and less surrounded by discount stores. . The symbolic value of H&M needs to be underscored either through an advertisement campaign or celebrity endorsements. Although celebrities demand big bucks, the endorsements are worth the price if done in moderation and with the best of the best.
